Situation Snapshot
Mary*, a single mother who had been enduring a difficult and unsafe domestic violence situation at home, was referred to our #SIFS program. This program focuses on improving wellbeing and relationships in families, to help children be cared for safely, with protection.
Goals & Challenges
Shamefully, when she had tried to reach out to others for help prior to contacting us, she was rejected.
Mary’s wellbeing suffered greatly because of this experience – emotionally, mentally, and physically, and she was finding it hard to trust anyone, initially including us.
Additionally, the family was facing severe financial hardship, and were struggling to provide the basic necessities for the kids.
Mary needed to get stable financial and emotional support, so that her family felt safer and more protected. She needed to be able to provide for her family, particularly her children, and keep them from harm.
Due to Mary’s previous experiences, she didn’t trust easily.
What Accoras did
Our Case Coordinator took the time, and moved at her pace to build rapport, and a respectful relationship.
Once that was in place, they connected her with consistent welfare payments and childcare services.
The outcome
This has made Mary and her family feel far more safe and stable. After years of attempting to get help, our Accoras Case Coordinator delivered it in weeks.
Mary’s relationship with her kids is stronger, and they are able to enjoy life’s little pleasures again. They can go out for pizza, buy juice for the kids, and have a sense of security for the future.
What she says
‘Thank you so much for the help, I tried to get this subsidy for years, and it never happened, but you did it in a few weeks.’
‘Tonight I took the kids out for pizza, we haven’t been out to dinner for a year. They are so happy and so different. After dinner, my son said, ‘Mum, I am going to do my homework and take care of my sister.” Kudos to you for their happiness.’ -Mary
