Building life skills and working towards improved mental health and wellbeing

Free mental health support for Ipswich children (6 months to 12 years) with, or at risk of complex mental illness.

The Accoras Psychosocial Outreach Program (APOP) is a free, flexible outreach service offering support in homes and schools across the Ipswich and West Moreton region for children aged six months to 12 years who have (or are at risk of developing) a complex mental illness or impaired psychosocial functioning, and their families and support systems. APOP provides case management, clinical and psychosocial support, and aims to improve the mental health and wellbeing of children and families, reduce waiting lists for local mental health services and increase the mental health literacy of the Ipswich service community supporting families.

Support to help children thrive

APOP supports children (and their families) by focusing on:

  • Social skills, friendships and family connections

  • Daily living needs and functioning

  • Education and life skills

  • Physical wellbeing, including exercise and a healthy routine

  • Understanding healthy relationships and protective behaviours

  • Building confidence and resilience

  • Building mental health literacy

  • Emotion regulation and management

About the APOP approach

APOP provides goal-focused, holistic tailored support and case management for children living in the Ipswich and West Moreton region, who have (or are at risk of developing) complex mental illness or impaired psychosocial functioning. Children must have a parent or caregiver who agrees to the child’s referral and to participate in the APOP assessment and intervention.

APOP Child, Youth and Family Practitioners work with children and families, focusing initially on building relationship and connection, assessing needs and helping to develop wellbeing goals and a plan to achieve them. Wellbeing goals are tailored to the individual needs and lives of each child, and may include a focus on improving school engagement and functioning, emotional and physical health and wellbeing, family functioning and communication and building key life skills to help children flourish as they grow. Working from a child-centred and family-focused approach, Practitioners deliver a range of therapeutic interventions to help children learn to understand and regulate their big emotions.

APOP Mental Health Clinicians also work with children and families, delivering a range of therapeutic and clinical mental health interventions to address mental health difficulties (including anxiety and depression) and working collaboratively with other medical and allied health professionals engaged in the child’s care.
